Senior Mechanical Engineer, Edinburgh

The Senior Mechanical Engineer will be expected to take responsibility for developing the mechanical/structural design of electrical machines. In the first instance this will focus on developing rotating electrical generator technology in the wind energy sector, focusing on the offshore market.

The Role

The Senior Mechanical Engineer will have a key role in the engineering development of technology and helping to ensure it is disseminated into a portfolio of high performance market ready products.

The successful candidate will be responsible for designing components, assemblies and machines using a wide range of computer aided engineering tools including Computer Aided Design (CAD) and structural Finite Element Analysis (FEA).

The successful candidate will directly contribute to the development of IP for our client.

His primary duties will include but are not limited to the following:
1. To assist in developing Permanent Magnet Generator (PMG) technology
a. Mechanical and Structural design of a 1MW prototype
b. Development of the electrical and electromagnetic design for application at the 6MW scale
c. Working closely with other engineering disciplines (e.g. mechanical and thermal engineers) to develop the fully integrated and optimal total design for the generators.
2. Work closely with engineering sub-contractors, manufacturing, test, electrical analysis, and thermal analysis partners.
3. Design configuration control and change management.
4. Develop test plans for the mechanical and structural testing of direct drive permanent magnet generators.
5. Develop new technology to establish and maintain the company as a global leader.

The Person

* Mechanical Engineering degree ideally with PhD level knowledge
* Qualifications leading to Chartered Engineer and membership
* Proven track record, with at least 5 years experience in Mechanical Engineering with rotating machines.
* Detailed knowledge on the design of rotating machinery.
* Using mechanical FEA tools to develop components and assemblies
* An understanding of heat transfer and thermal engineering
* Experience of working with third party engineering firms

Location Edinburgh

Salary: £45K to £54K
