Academic Attainment:
e.g. Degree, professional qualification Degree in physics or other relevant field is essential. A post graduate degree would be highly desirable.
A minimum of 3 years industrial experience is desired.
Key Skills:
The successful candidate will have experience in some or all of the following: DPSS laser design, 808nm/880nm/940nm pump diodes, pump head design, laser cooling system, thermo-optical modelling and characterization, optical design software (e.g. Zemax, TracePro), resonator modelling using GLAD or similar tool, non-linear optical design and characterization (SHG, THG, FHG), optical parametric oscillators, MOPA laser architecture, fibre optic delivery, reliability testing.
The ideal candidate will be a seasoned laser engineer who has direct experience of high power (100 W) diode pumped solid state lasers and has worked in a laser design program which has successfully transitioned into production in significant volume.
Other Preferences:

Able to analyse and present test results and other reports.
Must be flexible and adaptable to a changing environment.
Able to handle high work volumes in a multi task mode.

Optomechanical Design Engineer – west sussex // West Sussex

Thermo-mechanical modelling and analysis of high power laser head components and assemblies using SolidWorks/FEA or similar tools.
– Mechanical design of pump and gain modules for the high power laser systems and components using SolidWorks.
– Choose materials including mounts and thermal interface to insure an optimized performance of pump and gain modules and other optical components for high power laser.
– General mechanical design using Autocad.
– Create detail design prints of optical mounts and components to be manufactured by a sub contractor or purchased from the vendor.
– Liaise with sub contract suppliers on technical / cost issues.
– Work closely with laser and optical engineers on trade studies, concept development, design validation and feasibility studies
– Support Production group on prototype test, pilot build and vendor qualification and design change validation effort.
– Support Operations group with supplier selection and technical enquires.
– Modify / update drawings using an engineering change control system.

The ideal candidate will have 3+ years experience in developing high power diode laser pump modules including temperature control of gain media, stress analysis, verification and validation of modelling and product support from concept through to production.

Electromagnetic Application Engineer

Our client is expanding the business with the creation of the above position, based in one of UK offices (Horsham, Bracknell, Abingdon or Sheffield).

Responsibilities:

  • Provide specialist knowledge and support in the use and application of electromagnetic analysis and simulation tools, to support the design of electrical machinery, actuators, and sensors, as well as systems such as drives, controllers, inverters, and converters. Provide on-site demonstrations, presentations, and training for our software products.
  • Perform pre and post sales support for customers including evaluations, software benchmarking and high-level technical support.
  • Work closely with Field Sales Engineers to qualify opportunities and propose solutions for the customer. Provide the technical knowledge to define the best solution meeting customers’ requirements.
  • Collect feedback from customers reflecting the changing market and future product requirements on behalf of our other internal departments, such as marketing and R&D.
  • Develop materials for technical seminars, application notes, trade journals and conferences.

Requirements:

  • A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related subject.
  • A thorough understanding of electromagnetic devices and/or electrical system design
    and simulation, with a specialty in one or more of the following applications:
  • Experience with electrical, electromechanical, and/or electromagnetic simulation tools.
  • Previous experience in a customer or sales support role would be beneficial.
  • An energetic and independent team player with strong interpersonal, planning and communication skills.

The Role.

Design electrical and process control systems for use within national and international sites, in accordance with relevant electrical safety standards

Reporting to the Chief Software Engineer, the successful candidate will be able to demonstrate proven capability and experience in this high-profile embedded software design and development role. The work will involve designing real-time embedded software for high-performance control systems used in gasoline engine management applications, and innovative electric and hybrid power trains for new technology vehicle applications. This role is an ideal opportunity for an ambitious graduate engineer with around two years hands-on experience who is considering his or her first job move and who wishes to gain further software development experience in an important area of new technology.

Duties will include:

 Realisation of embedded software for 8-, 16- and 32-bit micro controllers using established company design practices and software life cycles in line with the ISO2001:2008 quality system and high integrity design standards.
 Interpretation of system requirements in collaboration with systems and hardware engineers to generate software requirements using formal methods.
 Generation and execution of test plans and reports at all levels of the “V” life cycle, including unit/structural tests, integration tests and verification/validation tests.
Code implementation using the C programming language, assembly language and automatic code generation from modelled environments.
Generation and formal review of technical documentation and artefacts from the design process.
Participation in Software FMEA, HAZOP and other similar review techniques.
Qualifications & Experience:

Mechanical Engineer Edinburgh

Our client is a small, dynamic and innovative company which specialises in the development of direct drive permanent magnet generator technology for the wind, wave and tidal energy sectors and the provision of specialist electro-mechanical engineering services for the power engineering sector. They are currently working on the next generation of their innovative generator technology.

The Role

The purpose of this role is to provide mechanical design engineering for electrical machines and devices in an integrated engineering team. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing components, assemblies and machines using a wide range of computer aided engineering tools including Computer Aided Design (CAD) and structural Finite Element Analysis (FEA). The role will also involve the analysis of thermal, stress, fluid dynamics, power transfer, vibration and machinery dynamics problems.

The role will ultimately contribute to the technical delivery of the technology to 6MW scale and beyond.

* To assist in developing PMG technology
a. Electrical and electro-magnetic design of the 1MW prototype
b. Development of mechanical and structural design for application at the 6MW scale
c. Working closely with other engineering disciplines (e.g. mechanical and thermal engineers) to develop the fully integrated and optimal total design for generators.
* Deliver documentation and engineering drawings appropriate for the design, manufacture and test of generators.
* Assist in the development of new technology to establish and maintain the company as a global leader in direct drive permanent magnet generators.

The Person

* Mechanical Engineering degree
* Proven track record of experience, with at least 3 years experience in mechanical engineering, working within context of rotating machines.
* Detailed knowledge on the design of rotating machinery
* Using mechanical FEA tools
* Producing 2D and 3D mechanical drawings, Bill of Materials, and component specifications
